Depression

Many of us will feel down from time to time. It’s a normal part of life, but, for some, feeling down can turn into something more.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression is an ongoing condition, professionally called major depression disorder, characterized by despair, hopelessness, sadness, and lack of interest in life.

You may be facing some of the following symptoms constantly for a period of at least two weeks:

  • little interest or pleasure in doing things
  • feeling down, hopeless, unhappy, disconnected, conflicted inside
  • trouble with sleeping (too much, too little)
  • poor appetite or overeating
  • feeling tired
  • holding guilt, shame
  • trouble concentrating
  • small activities and duties make you feel exhausted
  • falling behind on work or family duties
  • imagine your own death, questioning the purpose of your existence
  • thinking if the world will be better off without you
  • having angry outbursts
  • experiencing mood swings.

Am I depressed?

Everyone is struggling in life from time to time. However, when a person continuously experiences feelings of worthlessness, sadness, and hopelessness for more than two weeks, it could be depression.

It is very common that people struggling with depression, try short-term solutions to overcome the symptoms. Many people seek relief from depression through prescription antidepressants, while others seek out drugs for insomnia, stress. Sometimes, people seek out recreational drugs or drink too much alcohol, oftentimes leading to destructive habits and autoregressive behaviours.
