Sexual abuse

What are the consequences of sexual abuse in life?

People who are victims of sexual abuse may suffer from fear, rage, humiliation, shame, and trauma. Some of these things include flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, self-esteem issues, sexual dysfunction, depression, and other things. Sexual abuse is a term used to refer to sexual activity with someone who does not consent or who is unable or unwilling to give consent. It includes exploitation of a person for the sexual gratification by any type of forced sexual activity; for example, sexting, telephone calls, kissing, touching, exposing one’s body, and rape.

How can therapy help?

Therapy can be a scary word, but it doesn’t have to be. Therapy means you’re working through a problem or challenge in order to heal. In therapy, you can relieve trauma caused by sexual abuse, learn new coping skills, ways to deal with your feelings, and strategies for managing stress. Dealing with the consequences of sexual abuse is delicate work—but it’s also worth it. Remember, you have not done anything wrong, and the shame you carry is not yours! I know it’s important to start the healing process by creating a comfortable and safe environment, so I am here for you, open-hearted.
